Professor Zekarias is an associate professor of law at Addis Ababa University, School of Law (AAU). He has a long and exemplary academic career at AAU where he has taught various courses, served the school in different administrative capacities, and most notably, served as Dean of the Faculty of Law. His academic contributions also extend abroad where he taught a course on commercial arbitration to LL.M. students at Martin Luther University, in Halle Wittenberg, Germany in 2017. Professor Zekarias formerly worked as an attorney at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (1978 – 1981). He also served as a member of the National Law Revision Committee formed under the auspices of the then Ministry of Law and Justice in 1985. During the time he served, the Committee prepared two draft laws: “Draft Public Enterprises Proclamation” and “Draft Proclamation on Cooperatives.” Professor Zekarias has a longstanding service record on numerous areas of law at national and regional levels. He served as a Legal Officer in Secretariat of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights; a part-time legal advisor to the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA); and as a member of the Mid-Term Review Committee of a project titled: “Enhancing Human Rights Protection and Justice Service Delivery in Ethiopia.” He has also done extensive research in areas such as human rights, women’s rights, limitations on the freedom of the press, independence and impartiality of the Human Rights Commission and the Ombudsperson, insurance law and insurance policies in Ethiopia. He has also helped translate the UN Child Rights Convention into the Oromo language.
