Ms. Semhal Getachew Asrat has over fifteen years of experience working on women’s rights and issues of gender equality. Ms. Semhal has worked for women’s advocacy groups and the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association. She currently works for CARE Ethiopia, an international humanitarian organization, as an advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Her work with CARE Ethiopia supports initiatives that facilitate the economic development of women and youth in Ethiopia. Throughout her career, Ms. Semhal has consulted with a number of prominent institutions, such as Oxfam International and Farm Africa, to develop strategies that promote programs serving the economic and entrepreneurial interests of Ethiopian women. As part of her consultant work, Ms. Semhal provides sexual harassment training and develops gender sensitivity manuals for various institutions. Additionally, Ms. Sehmal has a strong background in the financial industry. She served as a legal officer of the National Bank of Ethiopia, providing legal advice on employment cases and drafting national anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing policies. Previously, Ms. Semhal taught courses in employment law and intellectual property rights at Mekelle University Law School.
