Professor Tilahun is one of the most prominent trial and arbitration attorneys in Ethiopia, in addition to being a highly acclaimed academic. He is a Professor of Law at Addis Ababa University (AAU), where he has served as a full-time faculty member since 1993 teaching courses in undergraduate and graduate programs. He has supervised numerous LL.B. and LL.M. theses and has been a research fellow at Northwestern University in Chicago and the University of Bayreuth. During his time at AAU, he has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law (1996 – 2001), Secretary of the University Senate, and currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to his time at AAU, Professor Tilahun served as a judge of the Special High Court and then also served as a presiding judge of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia for nearly ten years. Before he was a judge, he worked as a legal expert at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia until 1983. Professor Tilahun has extensively written and published on different aspects of Ethiopian law, including his widely read book “Basic Principles of Ethiopian Contract Law,” the copyright of which he donated to the Faculty of Law at AAU. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethiopian Law for several years. Professor Tilahun is a member of the International Board of Trustees of the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF), the African Law Association, the International Society of Family Law, and the Ethiopian Bar Association. He is the recipient of Certificate of Merit and Appreciation from the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce. He has also received recognition from the Mayor of the City of Detroit and the American Bar Association.
